The Book of James
James’s readers were suffering persecution and living in poverty. They were in social and spiritual conflict. Defection in the face of hardship happened. James calls them back to believing in Jesus. Such a belief in Jesus bears the gospel fruit of loving one another. As leader of the Jerusalem church, James wrote as pastor to instruct and encourage his dispersed people in the face of their difficulties.
